HOW TO GET WILD ANIMALS OUT OF THE ATTIC
With wild animals living in your attic, you’re bound to hear scampering and scurrying sounds every now and then. While these strange noises are annoying, they are the last thing you should be worried about when you have wildlife in your attic. Wild animals like raccoons, squirrels, and rodents can spread dangerous diseases in your home and also gnaw through your electrical wiring, creating a fire hazard. That’s why it’s important to keep them away from your attic. You must first discover what’s attracting the animals to your attic and get rid of it. If the wildlife problem still persists, you can resort to wildlife removal. Here’s a list of wild animals that live in the attic and how to remove them:
Rats and Mice
Roof rats, also called black rats, usually invade attics in search of food and a place to raise their young ones. Since the attic is warm and dark, it makes a perfect home for these rats. You can eliminate rats and mice from your attic by using conventional wooden snap traps or bait traps. However, the most effective rodent control method involves a combination of different removal techniques, including rodent proofing, rodenticide, harborage reduction, trapping, and increased attention to sanitation.
Squirrels
If squirrels are present in your attic, you’ll constantly hear scampering sounds in your home and you’ll notice damages on the eaves of your roof. These critters enter the attic through roof vents and soffit gaps. So, to keep them away, you have to block their entry points. Use steel mesh to cover the entry points tightly, but leave the main entry hole uncovered. After that, mount a one-way squirrel door at the hole, so that squirrels can exit the attic but not re-enter. The squirrels would be gone in a few days. After they leave, take off the one-way door you mounted earlier on and cover the main entry point with steel mesh.
When it comes to getting rid of squirrels in the attic, traps are not so effective. You could set traps on the roof, right next to the entry hole, but you may not capture all of them.
Raccoons
Raccoons invade the attic through different openings in your home, including loose shingles, damaged eaves, and the spaces in your roof. Raccoons are very destructive and can rip your shingles off while finding a way into your home. You can repel them from your home by turning on bright lights and a radio. This will make the animals leave on their own.
If you want to know whether raccoons are using a certain entry hole, block the holes with rags or pieces of paper and check to see if they’ve removed the materials. Mount a one-way door on the entry hole so that the raccoon can easily exit but not re-enter. Before you use a one-way door for removal, make sure that there are no baby raccoons in the attic. After all the raccoons have moved out, tightly cover the holes to avoid re-entry.
Possums
Possums are very agile and do a lot of climbing. They naturally have a bad odor and will pollute your attic with their foul smell and droppings. The most effective way to get rid of possums is through trapping. However, you must first find out if your state permits the trapping and relocation of these creatures.
Removing wild animals from the attic can be a very difficult job – climbing the roof and setting traps has never been an easy task. Therefore, it's advisable to always seek the assistance of a professional wildlife removal expert. They know how to remove unwanted animals safely and humanely.
